Ultrasound–produces
a picture of baby by using sound waves.
How does ultrasound
work?
Ultrasound has been safely used for
over 20 years to picture what’s going on inside the uterus. It’s
non-invasive and uses high-frequency sound waves beyond your range
of hearing. A small plastic transducer directs the sound waves to
your uterus, where they bounce off bones and tissue and are able to
be converted into a black and white image on a screen.
Ultrasound tests are commonly used to
confirm or date pregnancies, detect malformations, determine the
location of the placenta, detect multiple fetuses, and evaluate
fetal growth and health. Sometimes it’s possible to know the
baby’s gender as a result of the ultrasound. There are no known
risks to you or your baby as a result of having an ultrasound exam.
